It looked exactly like this, only in worse condition and painted brown.

I don’t know why these things are still on the planet. This is the automotive equivalent of Yahoo. I need to go look at some Citroens to lift my spirits.

That’s the only thing it’s good for, because WikiAnswers is too alt for me

I had the unfortunate experience of owning one of the heaps of shit. Was my first car actually. I share you confusion. They should all have been recycled into other cars by now, but somehow a few remain out there.

I see a red one at work from time to time. It has antique registration.

There used to be one in my old town with “Shitvette” airbrushed on the back. Always made me smile when I saw it.

Also had a buddy who owned one. He used to try picking up girls by telling them he had a ‘vette.

Good times.

Wow, I can’t believe these all haven’t faded into a small pile of dust and 8-track by now!! My introduction to America was via Chevette - my family moved over to Texas from the UK, and pops bought an ‘84 diesel ‘Vette. White. AM radio. With the 5 speed and everything! A piece of shit, but damn did it give me a love for the hatchback!

Borrowed on in the 80s - 4 speed, silver, steering column off center. I should have rolled it and let the woman get the insurance money.

“painted brown”...that was actually rust.

Brown is a good color for hiding the rust.

I totaled my VW Golf, which wasn’t a bad thing, saved me a lot of money in repairs. The car insurance company gave me a Chevette as a loaner. It was the most underpowered thing I’d driven up to that point. I still hadn’t driven a VW diesel yet.

The lack of power was actually a feature though, because once you actually got to highways speeds that chassis became so unstable it was scary. I actually used to plan routes to stay below 55 MPH, because not only did it take something like 20 seconds to get to speed, it was downright tiring to keep it in a straight line once it got there.

Oddly, since it was rear-wheel drive and light you could actually chirp/spin the tires with a neutral-drive dump off the rev-limiter.

I may have told people I had a “’vette” when I had mine as well.

I was doing a respray of it in my driveway with rattle cans, because it wasn’t worth anything anyway. I started with flat black primer and and sprayed “FUCK” across the side of it when I was done thinking it would be invisible, but I used like 3 different brands of paint and it stuck out pretty bad. Was in high school at the time and my neighbors all complained about it to my mom. About a week later I was out of town camping with my Boy Scout troop and she donated it to charity while I was gone. Hopefully the charity just crushed it for scrap value.

Sweet! My very first car was a Chevette. 1985 Chevette CS 2 door with a 3spd auto. It looked exactly like this except with 2 less doors. I had paid $400 bucks for it in 2001 I think it was.

Kinja'd!!!

Also did you know that his was the worst car Motorweek had ever tested? A Yugo had a more positive review
